Extension of Natural Gas Network to Ballymahon

The formal announcement regarding the extension of the Natural Gas Network to Ballymahon by Mr. Denis Naughten, T.D., Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment and Mr. Kevin “Boxer” Moran, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform with Special Responsibility for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief was held on Saturday evening in Ballymahon Community Library.

The Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Councillor Martin Mulleady, welcomed the announcement by Mr. Denis Naughten, T.D., Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment and Mr. Kevin “Boxer” Moran, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform with Special Responsibility for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief, that the Natural Gas Network is to be extended to County Longford.

Councillor Mulleady said "For some time Longford County Council has presented a very strong case for the gas pipeline to the Center Parcs development to be of the right size and be routed from Athlone.  This would ensure that all of County Longford can, in time, benefit from this essential infrastructure.  I am delighted with the announcement as it now means that Natural Gas can be made available, not just to the Center Parcs development but also to our towns and businesses throughout County Longford."

In welcoming the announcement by Ministers Naughton and Moran, Chief Executive of Longford County Council Mr. Paddy Mahon praised the role of all the Elected Representatives serving County Longford and all of the Business Communities who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the Natural Gas Network can now be extended throughout County Longford.  This highlights the strength of a team working together with an agreed strategy and desired outcomes for the future.

The announcement is, according to Mr. Mahon, "an excellent opportunity for existing businesses and industries to become more competitive while reducing carbon emissions.  This is a great boost for the economy of County Longford and by having Natural Gas available, Longford will now be more attractive to potential investors.  The County and its communities can now look to the future with a renewed sense of confidence."

Councillor Mulleady acknowledged the central role played by the Center Parcs development in the announcement.  "The Center Parcs development has provided a unique opportunity for County Longford to grow and prosper.  The announcement is a clear example of how the Center Parcs development is contributing in a very positive way to the towns and communities of County Longford".
