Waste Collection Permits.

Under the waste management (collection permit) Regulations 2001, a person running a waste collection business must apply and receive a waste collection permit from the relevant local authority. Offaly is the lead authority for the issuing of waste collection permits in the Midland Region. If you are in the business of moving any type of waste in the Midland Region, you must apply for a waste collection permit to Offaly County Council. Movement of waste without a waste collection permit is an offence. Waste collection permits govern the movement of the majority of waste types such as commercial and household recyclable items, construction and demolition waste, waste soil, electrical goods, tyres, batteries, cooking oil etc. If you are in the business of moving waste, please ensure that you hold a relevant waste collection permit.

If you are using the services of a waste collection contractor for your home or business, please ensure that the contractor holds a relevant collection permit. All permit holders are obliged to display a clearly visible sign on their vehicles. This sign should contain the collection permit number. It is an offence to give waste to someone that does not hold a waste collection permit.

Waste Collection Permits: Mushroom Compost :

The mushroom Industry has been the most spectacular success of Irish Horticulture in recent years. Due to most mushroom producers being on farms with an area less than 20 ha insufficient land exists for the spreading of excess Spent Mushroom Compost (SMC). This means that in most cases, the SMC will have to be disposed of away from the mushroom farm. This may be done by a contractor removing the SMC off the mushroom farm for eventual land spreading or by the producer himself spreading surplus SMC on adjoining land.
Agriculture producers are interested in SMC primarily as a source of nutrients that could reduce the cost of fertiliser in crop production.
The adoption of the best management practices in relation to land spreading by these farmers is increasingly becoming a legislative requirement. Under the Waste Management act 1996, any person who collects waste to transport or dispose of it on other land, which it did not originate, needs a waste collection permit.
