Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS)

The Rental Accommodation Scheme is a new scheme for RAS Logo

people who have been receiving long-term rent supplement (in excess of 18 months) and who need long-term housing by the Longford Local Authorities (Longford Town Council & Longford County Council).

Under the scheme, Longford Local Authorities will negotiate availability contracts with landlords for the use of their properties for medium to long term use whereby the Council to provide accommodation to those who have been in receipt of Rent Supplement for at least 18 months and who have a real, long term housing need which they cannot meet from their own resources.

This exciting new Public Private Partnership offers advantages for the Council, the Landlord and the Tenant and will become an integral part Social Housing Provision in Longford Town and County.

Tenants

The Scheme will provide additional, good quality accommodation for people receiving rent supplement and it will help the local authorities to provide long-term housing for people who need it.

The security of tenure and protections offered by the Private Rented Tenancies Board make living in RAS accommodation a realistic and attractive medium to long term housing choice. In addition, tenants will also have access to a range of housing supports.

Landlords

The Council will enter into contractual arrangements with accommodation providers, landlords, property owners, estate and letting agents.

The Council will assume responsibility for making prompt monthly payments to landlords for the duration of the contract. Payment to landlords will be made monthly by electronic funds transfer (EFT). The landlord will not have to collect rent from the tenant.
