Longford County Council is the road authority for the National Secondary Roads in the County:
The National Roads Authority (NRA) has overall responsibility for planning and supervising the construction, improvement and maintenance of the network of national roads (including access routes to the principal ports and airports).
The extent of improvement and maintenance works on national roads depends on the annual grant allocation made by the National Roads Authority. Major improvement works may be carded out by contract. The County Council acts on behalf of the NRA in the placing and supervising of roadwork contracts. Routine maintenance works are carded out by direct labor.
Longford County Council is the road authority for the Regional Roads in the County.
Longford County Council is the road authority for the Local Roads in the County.
Longford County Council is committed to the maintenance and improvement of non- national roads. In addition to the annual discretionary grant allocation from the Department of the Environment and Local Government, the Council commits significant resources to maintenance and improvement works. Following notification of the grant allocation from the Department, a programme of works is prepared (Annual Road Works Scheme). Over 80% of the roadworks on non-national roads are carried out by direct labour with contractors being employed for peak season and specialist macadam work. The selection of projects and the manner of their execution seeks to optimise the return from expenditure incurred.
In preparation for proposed developments, Longford County Council seeks mutual agreement with the landowners involved for the acquisition of the lands necessary to undertake the roadworks. If agreement cannot be reached, the Local Authority has power to acquire the land by Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) in accordance with the procedures set out in legislation. Persons whose property may be the subject of a CPO may appeal to An Bord Pleanala against the making of the order.
As a road authority, Longford County Council is responsible for the provision and maintenance of public lighting. Traffic-route lighting is generally provided in the course of road improvement works.
