Ballymahon Library will be closed from 30th January, 2010 due to major refurbishment works being carried out to the Market House building. During the works a temporary library service will be available every Friday from 12-6pm in the Dean Egan Library ( opposite the Vocational School).
The Community, Sports And Arts Facilities Audit for County Longford is now available. The purpose of this report is to provide an audit of the existing community, sports and arts facilities serving the County of Longford.

Longford County Council staff are currently progressing a lead survey to determine the extent of lead pipes in the distribution network of the water supply. This involves assessing buildings that were built pre 1970, discussions with caretakers etc., to identify areas of lead piping in the network.
Longford County Council wishes to inform the public of the closure of the R194 from Kiernans’s Forge to Doherty’s Cross in Killoe. This is due to Bridge and Culvert Damage at Esker. This section of road will be completely closed until further notice.
The original Draft Development Contribution Scheme which was adopted by the Council in March 2004 for the period up to 31 December 2009 is now under review. The Development Contribution Scheme has had a very positive impact on the delivery of infrastructure in Longford since its introduction.
The Waste Management Regulations 2009 make more explicit the offence of disposal of waste by uncontrolled or unregulated burning and specifies the actions which are prohibited.Exemption is provided for certain agricultural practices but only as a last resort and after specified steps are taken.
The Local Government (Charges) Act 2009 introduces a €200 annual charge on non principal private residences, payable by the owner(s) of the NPPR to the Local Authority in whose area the property concerned is located. The charge applies mainly to owners of private rental property and holiday homes. It also applies to vacant residential property unless newly built but unsold.

Longford County Council is pleased to announce that the Traveller Accommodation Programme 2009-2013 is now available for viewing. The plan was adopted on the 25th of February last.
Enforcement Policy on Illegal Waste Activity. At the February Monthly Meeting of Longford County Council a prolonged discussion took place in relation to the Council’s Enforcement Policy on Illegal Waste Activity. A document that sets out the Council’s policy has recently been compiled.
For the last year Longford County Council has been involved in a waste prevention project which is being funded by the Environmental Protection Agency through the Environment Fund. The Local Authority Prevention Demonstration Programme (LAPD) is an important part of the National Waste
Prevention Programme which is supported by the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government.
Lambing Season 2008. In 2008 County Longford again experienced the cruelty of sheep and lambs being attacked by dogs, which were not kept under proper control. The law states that owners must keep their dogs under effectual control at all times or face fines or prosecution. This means that dogs must not be allowed to stray or wander day or night.
Longford County Council has recently adopted a new policy in relation to the taking in charge policy of private housing developments. The new policy was adopted at the Council meeting of 18 June 2008.
