Longford County Councils will be holding a joint large goods and hazardous waste collection from 10am to 12 noon at Longford Slashers car park on 11th September and at The Public Car Park Lanesboro 18th September.
The County Council’s newly established Income Collection Department will open on the 7th September 2010 and operate from the Council’s Camlin Court office. Directional signage will guide customers to the re-located Cash Desk.
Details of the process of application for a Postal Vote are now available for inclusion on the register of electors. Various categories of persons are eligible to apply for inclusion as outlined. In addition applications are also invited for inclusion on the Draft Register of Electors for 2011/2012.
The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources proposes to grant/renew Prospecting Licences under the Minerals Development Act 1940-1999. Full details of the proposed townlands and accompanying maps are now available for viewing.
Now in it’s twentieth year, Heritage Week is growing from strength to strength, and will be taking place nationwide from Saturday August 21st to Sunday August 29th inclusive. A wide range of events is taking place during heritage week in Longford this year to celebrate Heritage Week.
Local Authorities have been asked by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), Ireland’s specialist agency for the surveillance of communicable diseases to assist in raising awareness of Lyme Disease amongst the general public. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi which is spread by the bite of a tick.

Longford County Council wish to advise all water consumers in the Longford Area that due to the current fine spell of weather, we are experiencing difficulty in maintaining water supply & pressure into this area during the day. Longford County Council request that consumers refrain from non-essential use of water for watering gardens, washing cars etc.

Cllr. Peggy Nolan, Mayor of Longford officially launched this new Transition Year resource on Monday last in the Council Chamber. The purpose of this resource is to raise awareness about the place of local government in the democratic system and to educate young people about the roles and responsibilities of the local authority.
Longford County Council has a scheme in operation, up to a maximum of € 450 for each cemetery, to support general maintenance and tidying works in cemeteries in Co. Longford. The purpose of the scheme is to support Community and other Voluntary Groups maintaining and improving cemeteries.
Funding of up to €1.5million is available for small scale fit-out, refurbishment works or building enhancement projects to existing Youth Cafes and for the start up of new youth cafes. This measure of funding is being administered by Pobal on behalf of the Office for the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs.

Longford County Council proposes to take a supply of water, for the purpose of increasing or extending Longford Central Regional Water Supply Scheme from the River Shannon at Lough Forbes, sufficient for the requirements of the region. The full proposal text is now available for viewing.

Ballymahon Library will be closed from 30th January, 2010 due to major refurbishment works being carried out to the Market House building. During the works a temporary library service will be available every Friday from 12-6pm in the Dean Egan Library ( opposite the Vocational School).

Longford County Council staff are currently progressing a lead survey to determine the extent of lead pipes in the distribution network of the water supply. This involves assessing buildings that were built pre 1970, discussions with caretakers etc., to identify areas of lead piping in the network.
Longford County Council wishes to inform the public of the closure of the R194 from Kiernans’s Forge to Doherty’s Cross in Killoe. This is due to Bridge and Culvert Damage at Esker. This section of road will be completely closed until further notice.
The original Draft Development Contribution Scheme which was adopted by the Council in March 2004 for the period up to 31 December 2009 is now under review. The Development Contribution Scheme has had a very positive impact on the delivery of infrastructure in Longford since its introduction.
The Waste Management Regulations 2009 make more explicit the offence of disposal of waste by uncontrolled or unregulated burning and specifies the actions which are prohibited.Exemption is provided for certain agricultural practices but only as a last resort and after specified steps are taken.
The Local Government (Charges) Act 2009 introduces a €200 annual charge on non principal private residences, payable by the owner(s) of the NPPR to the Local Authority in whose area the property concerned is located. The charge applies mainly to owners of private rental property and holiday homes. It also applies to vacant residential property unless newly built but unsold.

Longford County Council is pleased to announce that the Traveller Accommodation Programme 2009-2013 is now available for viewing. The plan was adopted on the 25th of February last.
Enforcement Policy on Illegal Waste Activity. At the February Monthly Meeting of Longford County Council a prolonged discussion took place in relation to the Council’s Enforcement Policy on Illegal Waste Activity. A document that sets out the Council’s policy has recently been compiled.
For the last year Longford County Council has been involved in a waste prevention project which is being funded by the Environmental Protection Agency through the Environment Fund. The Local Authority Prevention Demonstration Programme (LAPD) is an important part of the National Waste
Prevention Programme which is supported by the Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government.
Lambing Season 2008. In 2008 County Longford again experienced the cruelty of sheep and lambs being attacked by dogs, which were not kept under proper control. The law states that owners must keep their dogs under effectual control at all times or face fines or prosecution. This means that dogs must not be allowed to stray or wander day or night.
Longford County Council has recently adopted a new policy in relation to the taking in charge policy of private housing developments. The new policy was adopted at the Council meeting of 18 June 2008.
