Waste Permits

Waste Facility Permits and Certificates of Registration

Waste facility permits (WFP) and certificates of registration (COR) are issued by Longford County Council under the Waste Management (Facility Permit and Registration) Regulations 2007. Waste licences are issued by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Whether you need a WFP, a COR or a waste licence depends on the tonnage and type of waste handled and processed at facility, as well as other factors. For example, a landowner seeking to raise a portion of a field using waste soil and stone sourced from a nearby construction site typically requires a COR, but a WFP may be required if the total tonnage of waste to be accepted exceeds a certain threshold.

A waste authorisation (WFP, COR and waste licences) are a legal requirement. Appropriate waste authorisation must be obtained in advance of commencing a waste activity. Failure to comply is an offence and subject to legal action, potential fines and possible other enforcement actions, resulting in considerable expenses incurred by the landowner and/or operator.

To apply for a WFP or COR, please see the Waste Facility Permit and Certificate of Registration application form.

It is an offence to deposit or accept waste materials at a facility which does not have a WFP, COR or a waste licence. If using a facility to deposit or recover waste or recyclable goods, ensure the waste facility holds a current WFP, COR, or waste license which authorises the acceptance of waste.

Waste Collection Permits and Movement of Hazardous Waste

The Waste Management (Collection Permit) Regulations 2007 require all collectors of waste, including the movement of hazardous waste, to hold a valid waste collection permit. This permit specifies the waste types to be collected, vehicles to be used, hours of operation and further conditions.

Offaly County Council is home to the National Waste Collection Permit Office (NWCPO) and is responsible for processing of all new waste collection permits. Contact NWCPO at Offaly County Council:

If using a waste collection service for your home or business, ensure the contractor holds a relevant collection permit. Permit holders must clearly display their collection permit number on their vehicles. It is an offence to give waste to someone that does not hold a waste collection permit.
