Longford Burial Grounds and Cemetery Byelaws 2025
Longford County Council is responsible for the management and maintenance of a number of cemeteries across County Longford. The Longford County Council Cemetery Byelaws 2025, adopted by the elected members of the Council in September 2025, set out the rules and standards for the operation, upkeep, and respectful use of all Council-managed burial grounds.

Acquiring a Right of Burial
Before any burial can take place, it is necessary to apply to Longford County Council to acquire a Right of Burial in a grave space.
To apply, please complete the Application to Purchase or Register Right of Burial form and return it:
- To the relevant cemetery caretaker
or
- Email the completed form to burials@longfordcoco.ie
Charges for graves:
- Single plot – €450
- Double plot – €800
In addition to this application, families or funeral directors must liaise with the cemetery caretaker regarding the proper management and recording of each burial. Your undertaker can assist with this process on your behalf.
Erecting or Amending a Memorial Headstone or Monument
Only a commercial headstone company (operating for profit) is permitted to erect or alter a headstone or monument in a Council-managed cemetery.
Permission Required
Before any work begins, permission must be obtained from Longford County Council.
How to Apply
- Complete the application form Fill out the Permission to Erect a Memorial Headstone or Other Structure / Amendment of Monument form.
- This form must be completed by the company carrying out the work (for example, the sculptor).
- Submit the completed form Send the form by email to burials@longfordcoco.ie or
post/deliver it to:

Important Requirements
- Applications must be submitted before any work begins.
- If this is the company’s first application of the year, a copy of their public liability insurance must be included.
- Minimum indemnity: €6.5 million
- The policy must specifically indemnify Longford County Council.
- A risk assessment must be completed before starting any work. The Health and Safety Authority’s Safe Systems of Work Plan may be used as guidance.
Failure to comply with Longford County Council’s Cemetery Byelaws may result in enforcement action.
