€0.9 million approved for Public Realm Enhancement works in Longford Town

Creating a more accessible and vibrant town centre environment

Longford County Council has welcomed the approval of €0.9 million in funding for the Lower Main Street Public Realm Enhancement Project under the Government's new Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund programme.

Announced this week by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, the national programme will provide up to €409 million for almost 120 regeneration projects across the country, supporting the revitalisation of town and city centres and advancing the objectives of the Town Centre First policy.

The Lower Main Street project will transform a key gateway into Longford Town, delivering a range of public realm improvements designed to make the area safer, more accessible and more attractive for residents, businesses and visitors.

The scheme focuses on the section of Lower Main Street between Little Water Street and Richmond Street and will complement significant regeneration investment already underway in the Camlin Quarter and at Seán Connolly Barracks.

The project includes the reconstruction and widening of footpaths, a new pedestrian crossing, new accessible parking facilities, heritage-style energy-efficient public lighting, undergrounding of overhead utility cables, new street furniture, bicycle parking, landscaping and tree planting. The scheme will also improve connections between the town centre, the Camlin Quarter, the Seán Connolly Barracks redevelopment project and the Council's new Tourism Office at the Old Post Office.

Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Gerry Hagan said, “This funding is a significant investment in the future of Longford Town and a strong endorsement of the work being undertaken to regenerate and revitalise our town centre. The Lower Main Street enhancement project will also strengthen connections to key regeneration projects such as the Camlin Quarter and Seán Connolly Barracks. This investment will help support economic activity, encourage sustainable travel and improve the overall experience of our town centre for everyone.”

Longford County Council Chief Executive Samantha Healy said, “This investment is a great vote of confidence in Longford and it will help create a more welcoming, accessible and vibrant town centre environment, encouraging walking and cycling, supporting local businesses and enhancing the overall appearance of the northern gateway to Longford Town. The project supports the objectives of the Longford Town Local Area Plan, Longford's Town Centre First Plan and the Council's wider regeneration programme.”

The project will now proceed through the next stages of design, statutory approvals and procurement in advance of construction.
