14 County Longford projects allocated €328,000 under Community Climate Action Programme

Projects confirmed as Minister Jack Chambers visits EDI Centre, Longford

Press Release: Thursday, 19 September 2024

Fourteen County Longford climate action projects have been allocated funding of €328,000 under the Community Climate Action Programme. Minister of Finance Jack Chambers visited a funded project at the Employment Development and Information (EDI) Centre in Mastertech Business Park, Longford on Monday, 9 September.

The EDI Centre project involved the purchase of a biodigester which has recently been installed. The biodigester is an effective way to dispose of food waste by breaking it down to produce an organic soil enhancer that can be added to soil or clay to improve its growth potential. It will be used ny the EDI Centre's community cafes and shows the organisations commitment to sustainability and the circular economy.

The Community Climate Action Programme is a Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications initiative, supported by Longford County Council. The Programme supports small and large, rural, and urban communities for local climate action projects and initiatives.

The 14 funded projects are across all three municipal districts and include the installation of water harvesting equipment and solar panels, and projects related to active travel, waste, energy, and biodiversity. Also included is an edible landscapes project which involves planting native fruit and nut tree and bush species. All projects have now entered the delivery phase.

Welcoming the confirmation of the County Longford funded projects, Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Mark Casey said, "It is great to be here today to welcome Minister Chambers to Longford to see how department funding is being used by local organisations for innovative climate action projects, for their benefit, the benefit of the local community and the local and wider environment. I congratulate all organisations and look forward to seeing more and more projects up and running."
