3 October 2022

Longford County Council, Longford Age Friendly Alliance and Longford Older Person’s Network will host an Age Friendly Information Day for older persons living in County Longford. The event takes place in Longford Rugby Club on Thursday 6 October, starting at 11am.

At the event, organisations catering for older people will provide information on their services. There will also be opportunities for people to meet with and talk to service providers in person. Organisations in attendance will include Health Service Executive, Citizens Information, Community Gardaí, Longford County Council, and the Council’s Age Friendly Programme.

Motivational speaker Brian McIvor will deliver the keynote address at the event. Longford Age Friendly Ambassador Declan Nerney will also be making a special appearance.

Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Turlough McGovern encouraged older people to attend. “It will be hugely empowering for older people to know exactly what is available to them and to be able to meet with and speak to these organisations in person. Thanks to everyone involved, I know it will prove to be a valuable day for our older citizens.”

Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon spoke on the importance of the work of the Council in helping older people. “The Council, working with Longford Age Friendly Alliance and Longford Older Person’s Network, proudly promotes this excellent opportunity for older people to find out all about the services available to them.”

National and local Older People’s Council Chair Kitty Hughes added, “We want to embrace the positive ageing theme of challenging ageism and reframing how we think, feel and act towards ageing and older persons whilst also celebrating everything that older persons contribute to their community.”

A light lunch will also be served. Pre-booking is essential as places for the event are limited. To book your place, please contact the library at 043 334 1124 or email library@longfordcoco.ie.
