Amber Thursday: highlighting fire, road and water safety ahead of Bank Holiday weekend

Longford County Council Roads, Longford Fire Services and Civil Defence join up to promote safety

Press Release: Monday, 29 July 2024

This Thursday, 1 August, Longford’s fire, road, and water safety officers are promoting #AmberThursday to highlight risks associated with fire, road and water activities.

Amber Thursday takes place each year on the Thursday leading into the August bank holiday weekend. It is a joint national social media campaign to promote fire, road and water safety advice and guidance ahead of the busy weekend. Knowing #FireSafety, #RoadSafety, and #WaterSafety is key to preventing accidents.

Road Safety, Fire Prevention and Water Development Officers in respective areas and services use the collective opportunity to raise awareness about the various risks and dangers associated with
fire, road and water-based activities. Everyday, we need to think about #SafetyFirst.

We ask everyone to use #AmberThursday and the safety hashtags included above in their social media posts in the lead-up to or over the bank holiday weekend to help spread the message.

At the launch of Amber Thursday, Longford County Council Leas Cathaoirleach Cllr Peggy Nolan said “I am proud to support this Amber Thursday safety message. Our emergency services do
important work and proceeding with caution can ensure the wellbeing of our community. Remember to look out for one another and adhere to safety guidelines so that everyone can enjoy
a safe bank holiday weekend.”

Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon said “The Amber Thursday campaign will help remind people that the most important thing to remember this summer is #SafetyFirst. Amber Thursday reminds us of the risks associated with fire, road, and water activities. Summer is a fantastic time to explore all of Longford’s land and water-based activities, whilst respecting safety guidelines and best practices.”
