Amber Thursday to highlight fire, road and water safety ahead of Bank Holiday

The August Bank Holiday is a busy time for everyone, so this Thursday, 3 August, Longford’s fire, road and water safety officers are promoting #AmberThursday to highlight risks associated with fire, road and water activities. Knowing #FireSafety #RoadSafety and #WaterSafety is key to preventing accidents.

The message is for anyone, whether they are outdoors, in the home, on the water or on the road over the bank holiday weekend, but indeed every day we all need to think #SafetyFirst.

Amber Thursday takes place each year on the Thursday leading into the August bank holiday weekend. It is a joint national social media campaign to promote fire, road and water safety advice and guidance ahead of the busy weekend.

Road Safety, Fire Prevention and Water Development Officers in respective areas and services use the collective opportunity to raise awareness about the various risks and dangers associated with fire, road and water-based activities.

We ask as many people as possible to use #AmberThursday and the safety tags included above as #roadsafety #firesafety #watersafety etc, in their social media posts in the lead-up to, or over the bank holiday weekend itself to help spread the message.

Speaking at the Longford launch of Amber Thursday, Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Colm Murray said “Our emergency services do such wonderful work, and I am glad to support it by launching this Amber Thursday safety message. We all need to take personal responsibility for spreading this message so that everyone gets to enjoy a safe, and hopefully sunny, bank holiday weekend.”

Chief Executive Paddy Mahon said, “Summer is a fantastic time to get out and enjoy all of the water and land-based amenities that Longford has to offer, and the Amber Thursday campaign will help remind people that the most important thing to remember, when doing that, is #SafetyFirst.”
