Press Release: Wednesday, 8 July 2026

County Longford Arts Service and Longford County Council in collaboration with media partner The Longford Leader is proud to announce the Longford Arts Recognition Awards 2026.

County Longford’s art and culture scene continues to thrive, reflecting the county’s rich heritage, strong artistic spirit, and growing creative confidence. From the literary legacy associated with Maria Edgeworth and Oliver Goldsmith to the vibrant programmes delivered through Backstage Theatre, local galleries, community arts initiatives, and traditional music gatherings, creativity is woven into everyday life. Annual festivals, grassroots performers, visual artists, writers, and emerging talents contribute to a dynamic cultural landscape that connects generations while welcoming new audiences.

Longford’s commitment to supporting cultural participation and artistic development strengthens civic pride, enriches wellbeing, and ensures that the county remains a place where imagination, expression, and opportunity flourish together for artists and citizens alike.

The inaugural Longford Arts Recognition Awards aims to honour the dedication, talent, and impact that artists and creatives have in our county. These individuals are not only excelling in their chosen art form—they are quietly inspiring others to be creative, to try something new, and to belong.

Applications are now open for citizens to nominate any living artist or creative who resides in County Longford that they consider have made a significant contribution to Longford’s art and cultural legacy. The nominee can be from any art form or stage in their career and regardless of their status as an amateur or professional artist.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council Cllr Gerry Hagan, said, “The artists of County Longford make an invaluable contribution to the cultural life of our communities, they tell our stories, testify to our lived experience, our hopes and fears, and inspire future generations through their creativity. It is important that we take the opportunity to formally recognise and honour those whose talent, dedication, and achievements bring such pride to our county. These awards are a celebration not only of individual excellence, but of the rich and vibrant artistic spirit that continues to thrive across Longford.”

Deputy Chief Executive of Longford County Council, John Brannigan said, “These awards are a chance to shine a light on the people who have shaped art and culture in County Longford. From local artists to artists who have made Longford their home, the joy their creativity brings deserves to be recognised and celebrated. We are delighted to partner with The Longford Leader to share and celebrate their stories.”
