Celebrating Achievement: Longford Sports Partnership and Longford Leader host annual awards

Longford Sports Partnership honours athletes and volunteers for outstanding contributions

Press Release: Friday, 21 November 2025

Longford Sports Partnership, as part of Longford County Council, together with the Longford Leader, is proud to be associated with this year's prestigious Longford Sports Star Awards.

Since the inception of these awards, athletes from a wide range of sports and achievements have been recognised. The 2025 awards continue that tradition, celebrating an impressive variety of sports and world-class accomplishments.

Longford Sports Partnership congratulates all the winners of the 2025 Longford Sports Awards. This year’s honourees include athletes who have achieved remarkable success at local, national and international levels, alongside volunteers whose dedication ensures sport remains accessible to all.

The role of Longford Sports Partnership is to increase participation in sports and physical activity for everyone—particularly older people, girls and women, people with disabilities, unemployed individuals and those living in disadvantaged communities. This is achieved by creating opportunities, strengthening resources, increasing awareness and working within the structures of sport. High-performing athletes play a vital role in this mission by inspiring others and raising the profile of sport across the county.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Garry Murtagh said, "What strikes me most about this year's winners is the sheer breadth of talent emerging from every corner of our county. From world championship stages to community pitches, these athletes and volunteers show that excellence grows in all settings. They're not just winning medals—they're changing what young people in Longford believe is possible for themselves."

Chief Executive Paddy Mahon added: "The achievements we're celebrating reflect something deeper than individual success. They demonstrate that when communities invest in sport—through facilities, volunteers and encouragement—the returns multiply. These award winners have trained in local clubs, been coached by local volunteers and competed wearing Longford colours with immense pride. That's the foundation we need to keep building on."

Tony Headon, Longford Sports Partnership Chairperson said, "Sport is more than competition—it is connection, resilience and opportunity. These award winners remind us that behind every medal is a story of perseverance and community support. Longford Sports Partnership is committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of age or ability, has the chance to write their own sporting story."

Sarah Mulligan, Longford Sports Partnership Coordinator, said, "This year's winners span ten different sports, multiple age groups and every level of competition. What connects them all is commitment—their own individual dedication and commitment but also that of families who drive to early training sessions, volunteers who give their evenings and weekends, and communities that turn out to support them. When we recognise these athletes, we're also recognising that entire network. Longford Sports Partnership would like to thank all those who took the time to nominate the achievements of our talented sportspeople throughout County Longford. Each nomination reflected genuine admiration and showed how deeply sport matters here."

The awards will be presented at a gala celebration in the Longford Arms Hotel on Friday, 28 November at 8pm.
