County Longford is set to celebrate Culture Night on Friday, 19 September with a host of free events taking place throughout the county celebrating culture, creativity, and the arts.
Events will take place in Longford Town, Edgeworthstown, Aughnacliffe, Granard, Kenagh, Ballymahon and Clondra. All events are free of charge thanks to the support and funding from Longford County Council, the Arts Council of Ireland, Creative Ireland, Longford Night-Time Economy and Longford Tourism.
One of the highlights of events in Longford Town is ‘The Blind Fiddle Master’s Concert’ with the award-winning band, Kíla. This special late-night concert is a homage to Longford’s premier trad musician – Thomas Kernan from Drumlish and it takes place in Connolly Barracks from 9-11pm.
Funded through the Art’s Council of Ireland’s Culture Night Late Award – ‘The Blind Fiddle Master’s Concert’ will be a regional highlight of the culture night celebrations. The event will involve musicians and artists from diverse musical, visual art and cultural backgrounds including the Yershova Sisters – a classically trained quintet from Ukraine via Kerry and Longford’s premier Céilí band - Banna Céilí Béal Átha na Muc. All events and activities are free and celebrate culture, creativity, and the arts. Over 16 events are set to take place across County Longford.
A host of events will take place in Longford Town including BeWell Mum and Toddler Yoga from 5-6pm at the BeWell Centre, Mastertech Business Park; Story Swap and Tea- Culture Through Tales with Longford African’s Network at Crepe Café from 6.30-9.30pm and a classical quintet from the Yershova Sisters in Longford Library from 5-6pm.
Pig Lane Market in Longford Town will also be the venue for a number of events for Culture Night. A circus skills workshop in juggling, balance, and more takes place from 6-7pm and Sing and Dance with Dee Dee takes place from 5-6pm. Dee is the ultimate kids’ musical entertainer who brings joy, laughter, and toe-tapping fun to every event! With a magical blend of catchy tunes, interactive storytelling, and high-energy performances, Dee knows how to keep little ones engaged and dancing.
A DJ skills workshop also takes place in Pig Lane Market from 7-8pm with LEDJS. With over 20 years on the decks, DJs Dave and Kevin Hussey, the LEDJS have played everywhere from packed clubs and lively venues to weddings, corporate nights and small parties. As open-format DJs with a passion for all music genres, they know how to keep the energy flowing, and get any crowd on their feet. In this workshop, they will take participants through the basics of DJing.
Events will also take place in Edgeworthstown with ‘Our Heritage and Why it Matters’ in the Maria Edgeworth Centre from 5-9pm and Echoes and Exposures: An Evening of Music and Photography running in Edgeworthstown Library from 7-9pm.
Dancing at the Crossroads takes place in the Colmcille Community Centre from 6-8.30pm while Lus na Gréine FRC’s community garden in Granard is the venue for ‘Starlight, Folklore and Song’ from 7-9pm. Kenagh Culture Club runs in the Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre from 7.30-9.30pm while an evening of poetry and music from The Innyside Singers will take place in Ballymahon Library from 8-9pm. The Bridgeways Family Resource Centre in Ballymahon is also the venue for the Ballymahon Culture Night Concert from 7-9pm. An arts workshop for U12s takes place at Clondra Community Hall from 4.30-6pm.
