Longford County Council is delighted to host a civic reception for the Farrell Clan on Monday, 18 July. The event coincides with the official opening of the Farrell Clan Rally 2022, which will run until Friday, 22 July.

The civic reception celebrates the proud history and enduring connection between members of the Farrell Clan and their ancestral home of County Longford. Over 100 guests were welcomed by Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Turlough McGovern. Many guests came from across the globe, including Farrell Clan representative Richard Armitage, who travelled from Shawville, Quebec in Canada.

The year’s rally is the first Farrell Clan Rally since 2018 and is supported by Longford County Council. The first day of the Rally started with an opening of an exhibition of Farrell memorabilia and local crafts in Longford Library. A gathering also took place at The Remembrance Garden on Great Water Street before the civic reception in Longford County Council buildings.

Welcoming the Farrell Clan to the civic reception, Cathaoirleach Cllr Turlough McGovern said, “It is my great honour to extend a particularly warm welcome to members of the Farrell Clan who have come from far and wide to be here today. The Clan have a long and proud history with County Longford. I thank them for their enthusiasm for their ancestral home and for the work they continue to do to promote Longford abroad. I hope you all enjoy the many events taking place across County Longford as part of the Farrell Clan Rally this year.”

Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon added, “Longford County Council is delighted to see the return of the Farrell Clan Rally, which the Council has helped to support since the first Rally which took place in 1993. The long history of the gathering and the Farrells in Longford is celebrated here today at this civic reception in their honour. We look forward to continuing to deepen the connections between the Council and the Farrell Clan and all our Diaspora into the future.”
