Local organisations recognised at Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Awards 2024
Event celebrates Longford organisations and their volunteers

Local organisations have been recognised at the Cathaoirleach Awards, held on Wednesday, 22 May in Longford County Council.
At the event the following organisations, which are made up of people across County Longford, were recognised for their time and commitment to their locality:
• County Longford defibrillator groups: Nominated Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Colm Murray, defibrillator groups are in place in communities across County Longford. These groups fundraise and help to maintain defibrillators in their community. They also help to upskill members of the community in the use of this life-saving equipment. At the event, these groups were represented by volunteers from North, South and Mid-Longford.
• Newtownforbes TidyTowns and Biodiversity Group: Nominated by Longford Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr Martin Monaghan, this group consists of between 15-20 members who volunteer their time to improve the presentation of their local area for all. Members of the group also helped to implement the heritage and biodiversity trail, one of the busiest walking trails in County Longford.
• Mostrim Player: Nominated by Ballymahon Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr Paul Ross, this amateur drama group has 40 adult and 40 junior members. Set up in 2013, the group have performed many times, including comedies, pantomimes, and historical dramas. The group have also helped to send aspiring actors and directors to the Drama League of Ireland Summer School, helping them to gain valuable knowledge and experience.
• Granard TidyTowns Committee: Nominated by Granard Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr Turlough McGovern, this group works hard to improve their local area. This includes volunteering at all times of the year, in all weather, at weekends and at local events. All members of the group play their part and work tirelessly to encourage and foster greater pride in the community.
Speaking at the event, Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Colm Murray said, “It is great to be here to recognise these local groups and the people behind them who are doing great work in our local communities right across Longford. On behalf of the Council, I thank everyone for here this evening for all that they do, they are a credit to themselves and their local area.”
Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon added, “It is fantastic to get to mark the excellent work of Longford people at these Cathaoirleach Awards. The Council is delighted to be able to show local people the recognition they deserve for their incredible work.”
Those attending the event were also treated to wonderful musical entertainment with traditional music was played by members of the local group Strad.
