Longford and Mayo partnership showcases how artists can drive the circular economy

Minister Alan Dillon to address Repaired Arts Circular Economy symposium

Press Release: Thursday, 22 October 2026

Longford and Mayo County Councils are pleased to announce the Repaired Arts Circular Economy (R.A.C.E.) Symposium, which will take place on Friday, 6 November 2026, from 11am to 2.30pm at Swinford Cultural Centre, Station Road, Swinford, County Mayo (F12 WK83).  Minister Alan Dillon, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Circular Economy, will be the invited guest speaker for the event.
The symposium marks the culmination of the R.A.C.E. Project, an 18-month initiative that aimed to strengthen and enhance the capacity of local artists and festival organisers in Counties Mayo and Longford to incorporate circular economy principles into arts festival planning and delivery.
The project combined research, training and artist-led project work to investigate sustainable practices within the arts sector. Through the programme, participating artists explored new approaches to environmentally conscious creative practice and produced original works informed by the learning and insights gained throughout the project.
As well as a special address by Minister Alan Dillon, Minister of State, the symposium will include presentations on the research findings and an exhibition of artwork developed through the project. A panel discussion with artists, festival representatives and local agencies will examine the impact of projects such as R.A.C.E. and the role they can play in supporting circular economy approaches within the arts sector. The event will conclude with a light lunch and networking session.
Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Gerry Hagan said, “The R.A.C.E. project has shown how creativity and sustainability can work hand in hand. It has given artists in Longford and Mayo the opportunity to explore new ways of creating and presenting their work while reducing waste and making better use of resources. This symposium is an opportunity to share those lessons and to highlight the important role the arts can play in building a more sustainable future for our communities.”
Chief Executive of Longford County Council Samantha Healy said, “Longford County Council is proud to have supported the R.A.C.E. project and the strong collaboration between our Arts and Environment teams, artists, researchers and community partners. The project has demonstrated how circular economy principles can be applied in practical and innovative ways within the arts sector. We hope the knowledge and experience gained through R.A.C.E. will continue to influence festival planning, creative practice and environmental awareness long after the project concludes."
People with an interest or involvement in the Circular Economy and its role in the arts, creative practice and projects and festival making are encouraged to attend. Attendance is free of charge; however booking is essential, and you can do so by emailing mayoarts@mayococo.ie, please include your name, organisation and any specific dietary requirements by Monday, 2 November.
