Press Release: Monday, 27 April 2026

Longford County Council through Longford Sports Partnership in collaboration with the National Transport Authority have organised an action-packed week of events which will be held throughout the county to celebrate Bike Week 2026.

Bike Week, which runs from Saturday, 09 May to Sunday, 17 May, is a celebration and promotion of the benefits of cycling including the opportunity for physical exercise, enjoying our local natural and historical heritage, and contributing towards sustainable transport.

People from all cycling disciplines are welcome to come along and get involved. Highlights throughout the week in Longford include the secondary school Royal Canal Greenway group cycles with students from secondary schools in County Longford participating in guided groups during Bike Week.

Longford’s Women’s Gravel Cycle from Kenagh Community Centre takes place on Saturday, 09 May while Longford Athletics Centre in Longford Town will hold an inclusion learn to cycle taster session. On Wednesday, 13 May at 1pm workers in Longford are invited to come out and join a Bikers’ Lunch Cycle around Longford Town. On Friday, 15 May an older adult cycle from Clondra will see older cyclists travel along the Royal Canal Greenway with the opportunity to test out some electric bikes. On Saturday, 16 May, the Royal Canal Greenway Leisure Cycle will take cyclists on a guided cycle from Clondra to Kenagh.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Garry Murtagh said, “Bike Week is a great chance for people of all ages and abilities to get out and enjoy cycling in their own area. The programme in Longford shows how cycling can be social, inclusive and part of everyday life, whether you are cycling for fun, fitness or transport.”

Chief Executive of Longford County Council, Paddy Mahon said, “This programme reflects our commitment to supporting active travel and healthier communities across the county. By working with Longford Sports Partnership and the National Transport Authority, we are making it easier for people to try cycling in a safe and welcoming way during Bike Week.”

Bike Week events are an opportunity to dust off the bicycle and take the opportunity to find or rediscover the joy of cycling. A limited number of bikes are available to use at some events if needed.
