Cnoc Mhuire & Moyne Community School honoured

Press Release: Monday, 18 May 2026

Longford County Council recently hosted a Civic Recognition ceremony to honour the outstanding sporting achievements of Cnoc Mhuire Senior Football Team and Moyne Community School U‑16 Football Team. The event took place on Monday, 11 May 2026 in Granard Library, following a unanimous decision of the elected members of the Granard Municipal District.

Civic Recognition is one of the highest honours awarded by Longford County Council and is reserved for individuals and groups whose achievements bring pride to the county and their local communities.

Cnoc Mhuire Senior Football Team was recognised following a historic season, which saw the team complete a clean sweep of North Leinster, Leinster and All‑Ireland Senior B honours during the 2025/26 campaign. The team secured the All‑Ireland Post‑Primary Schools Senior B title, defeating St Nathy’s College, Ballaghaderreen in the final.  Moyne Community School U‑16 Football Team was honoured after an undefeated season, culminating in victory in the Leinster Post‑Primary Schools Junior (U‑16) Football Final. This marked only the second Leinster Junior title in the school’s history and the first provincial boys’ title since 2002.

Cathaoirleach of Granard Municipal District, Cllr Turlough McGovern said, “The players from Cnoc Mhuire and Moyne Community School have shown what can be achieved through hard work, teamwork and pride in where you come from. Their success means a great deal to their families, schools and communities, and they are real role models for younger people. Longford County Council is proud to honour these teams and to celebrate their remarkable effort and commitment.”

Director of Services with Longford County Council, Barbara Heslin, said, “These successes are the result of dedication from students, teachers, coaches and families over many years. They show the positive role that schools and sport play in building confidence, resilience and community pride. Longford County Council is delighted to formally recognise these achievements and the positive example they set for young people across the county.”

The Civic Recognition ceremony brought together players, coaches, families, elected members and school representatives to mark what was described as a proud occasion for the Longford–Cavan border region and the county as a whole.
