Longford County Council launches event programme for Africa Day 2025
Africa Day in Longford will take place on May 25th

Longford County Council and the Longford African's Network will celebrate Africa Day with a family fun day on Sunday, May 25th at the Longford Athletics Centre. The event which runs from 2-7pm is free of charge to attend and features an exciting programme including the following:
- Storytelling for Kids
- Cultural Exhibitions
- Vendor Stalls
- Fashion and Dance Parade
- Baobab Quiz (African history and culture)
- Kids' Fun Zone - Face painting & more
The Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond TD, recently launched the nationwide programme of events for Africa Day 2025.
Africa Day is the annual worldwide celebration of the people, cultures, and potential of the African continent. This year, all 31 Local Authorities across Ireland will host various cultural, artistic, and family-friendly events. These will include contemporary African Irish culture, as well as family fun days, fashion, art, film, music, dance, and food events, which will take place in towns and cities across Ireland.
Leas Cathaoirleach of the Longford Municipal District Cllr Uruemu Adejinmi, one of the organisers of the event said, "Africa Day will be a day of celebration and fun in Longford with everything from storytelling to music and dance including performances of Afro dance from 'The Chocolate Barbies' group, drummers, and a violinist while pre-loved African clothing will also be on display. The event also celebrates the power of integration and recognises other cultures with displays of Brazilian and Indian dance as well as the Polish community."
A special awards ceremony will also take place on the day to recognise the achievements of Africans in the community while supporters of the African community in Longford will also be acknowledged. Cllr Adejinmi made history in County Longford as the first female African Cathaoirleach of a county council in the country in 2021.

Watching our communities share food, music, stories, and traditions reminds us that integration isn't simply about living side by side, but about creating something new and vibrant together. This annual gathering helps us build the inclusive community we all deserve to call home."
