Longford County Council allocated €5,000 towards this bursary. It recognises aspiring individual sportspeople with potential to achieve success at national and international level. This year’s winners are:

  • Cian McPhillips: from Ardagh, Cian is a rising star of middle-distance athletics. In 2021, Cian set a new Irish Under-20 800m record of 1:46.13 to qualify for the European Senior Indoor Championships in Poland. Cian won gold in the 1500m at the European Under-20 Championships in Estonia. In 2021, he also set an Irish Under-20 1500m record of 3:40.56, more than two seconds faster than the previous 45 years-long record by Ray Flynn.
  • Darragh Greene: from Newtownforbes, Darragh is one of Ireland’s leading swimmers. A multiple national champion, Darragh was the first Irish man to break 60 seconds in the 100m breaststroke. He holds Irish senior records in 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke. He represented Ireland at European and World Championships, making the semi-finals of 50m breaststroke at 2019 World Championships and 2019 European (short course) Championships. In 2021, Darragh represented Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics.
  • Jakub Pasieczny: from Longford Town, Jakub is a rising start of Irish basketball. A student of St Mel’s Collage, he plays basketball with Longford Phoenix Basketball Club. He has been a member of the Irish under-18 basketball team for the past two year. Jakub hopes to continue playing international basketball with Ireland into the future and progressing to become a professional basketball player.
