Longford County Council steps up action on derelict and vacant properties

Delivering visible improvements across Longford County Council

Press Release: Thursday, 12 February 2026

Longford County Council is intensifying its work to tackle derelict and vacant properties, with significant progress already made this year. A total of 11 properties have been subject to derelict site levies in 2026, building on a number of enforcement actions taken throughout 2025.

The Council continues to prioritise this area as neglected buildings have a direct impact on communities, affecting safety, appearance, and local confidence. Through active enforcement and strategic interventions, Longford County Council is working to transform unused sites into assets that contribute to thriving towns and villages. The Council’s initial focus is on town centres and re invigorating town centres.

Under the Derelict Sites Act 1990, the Council has a clear set of tools to address problem sites, including:

  • Issuing notices requiring owners to clean up or improve their properties
  • Taking legal action where owners fail to comply
  • Using Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) when necessary to ensure long‑term dereliction does not continue unchecked
  • The Council’s approach combines enforcement with support. The aim is not only to address dereliction but also to encourage renewal, encourage owners to take action, and bring properties back into use—whether for housing, business, or community benefit.

Chief Executive, of Longford County Council Paddy Mahon said, “Longford County Council is determined to deal with dereliction in a practical and effective way. Every property we bring back into use strengthens a street and a town. This is about improving quality of life and making sure Longford continues to grow with pride and purpose. Our teams are working every day to ensure progress is visible on the ground and that derelict properties do not hold our communities back.”

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Garry Murtagh said, “This work is making a real difference. People want to see action, and Longford County Council is delivering it. Tackling dereliction is central to building places where people feel safe, welcome, and proud to live. I want to acknowledge the commitment shown by Council staff and by local communities who continue to support renewal efforts across the county.”

Longford County Council also encourages residents to report derelict or vacant sites so that they can be assessed and, where appropriate, added to the Derelict Sites Register. The register, along with maps of prescribed areas, is available on the Council’s website: Derelict Sites Register or GIS Mapping

By taking a strong, consistent approach and using every tool available, Longford County Council is committed to restoring unused buildings, improving the appearance and safety of local areas, and supporting the long-term vitality of communities across the county.
