Longford County Council to showcase Vacant Homes Grants at Build & Renovate Expo 2026
Grants of up to €70,000 available to bring vacant and derelict properties back into use
Press Release: Friday, 2 October 2026
Longford County Council's Vacant Homes Office will attend the Longford Leader Build & Renovate Expo 2026 to promote a range of grant schemes designed to bring vacant and derelict properties back into use and help address housing needs across the county. The free two-day event takes place on Saturday, 10 October and Sunday, 11 October at the Longford Arms Hotel.
Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the Vacant Homes Office team and learn about the financial supports available for homeowners, property owners, developers and those considering renovating, self-building or purchasing a home.
Among the schemes being promoted is the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, which provides funding of up to €50,000 for eligible vacant properties and up to €70,000 for eligible derelict properties to bring homes back into residential use. The scheme applies to properties vacant for two years or more and built before December 2007.
The Vacant Homes Office will also provide information on the Above the Shop Grant, which supports the conversion of vacant upper floors above commercial premises into residential accommodation. The scheme can provide funding of up to €135,000 per building, depending on the number of residential units created, helping to increase housing supply while supporting the regeneration of town centres.
In addition, information will be available on the VPRG Expansion Scheme, which supports the conversion of vacant or derelict commercial buildings into residential accommodation. Grants of up to €110,000 per building are available for eligible projects involving the creation of multiple residential units.
Those considering either an Above the Shop or VPRG Expansion project can also apply for the Expert Advice Grant Scheme, which provides up to €5,000 towards professional services such as surveys, site visits, plans and reports. The grant covers up to 67% of eligible costs and is intended to help property owners assess the feasibility of their projects before undertaking significant works.
Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Gerry Hagan said, "These schemes are making a real difference across County Longford by helping people bring vacant and derelict properties back into productive use. They are creating new homes, revitalising our towns and villages, and supporting sustainable communities. I encourage anyone who is interested in renovating a property or exploring these opportunities to visit the Longford County Council Vacant Homes Office stand at the Expo and find out what supports may be available to them."
Chief Executive of Longford County Council, Samantha Healy said, “The range of grants available offers significant financial support to property owners who want to restore vacant or derelict homes or convert unused buildings into residential accommodation. These schemes are an important part of our work in Longford County Council to tackle vacancy, increase housing supply and breathe new life into our town centres. The Build & Renovate Expo provides an excellent opportunity for people to speak directly with our Vacant Homes Office team and get practical advice on their options."
The Longford Leader Build & Renovate Expo 2026 will bring together homeowners, renovators, self-builders, homebuyers and industry professionals from Longford and neighbouring counties. Admission is free and visitors can access expert advice, products, services and information across all aspects of building, renovation and housing.
