Longford County Council has won the Regional (Midlands) Award and the Continuous High Achiever Award at the 31st Annual All-Ireland Occupational Safety Awards, which took place in the Galmont Hotel, Galway on Friday, 11 November.

This year’s achievement adds to Longford County Council’s successive wins at the awards each year, since first entering in 2014. In 2016, Longford County Council was the first public service authority to win the prestigious Silver Award. These national awards recognise health and safety management in the workplace. They are run by the National Irish Safety Organisation in conjunction with Northern Ireland Safety Group.

Longford County Council has also recently successfully maintained its ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System Standard. Re-accreditation to this standard was achieved following a two-day audit carried out by the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI).

Speaking after the awards, Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Turlough McGovern thanked all employees involved for their hard work. “I want to pay tribute to the employees of the Council for their continued hard work and dedication to health and safety in the workplace. It is a testament to their hard work that they continue to see success at these awards. I also thank the management of the Council for prioritising and showing great leadership in terms of Health and Safety.”

Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon added, “The Council’s Corporate Plan outlines our commitment to promoting a culture of continuous health and safety across the organisation. The Council is involved in public services with many high risk activities. Therefore, the safety of our employees, contractors and members of the public must be a top priority. These awards are positive recognition of the hard work that all employees have put into the safety management system.”
