Longford residents urged to check voter registration before key deadlines

October deadline for new voter registration ahead of Presidential Election

Longford County Council is calling on all eligible residents to verify their registration details ahead of the Presidential Election on 24 October 2025, with less than a month remaining for new applications to be submitted.

Following the Presidential Election Order made by Minister James Browne, Longford County Council is emphasising the importance of meeting crucial deadlines to ensure every eligible voter can participate in selecting Ireland's next President.

Key Dates:

  • 7 October 2025 – Final date for new voter registration applications
  • 29 September 2025 – Deadline for postal and special vote applications
  • 24 October 2025 – Polling Day (7am to 10pm)

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Garry Murtagh, said, "This Presidential Election offers every citizen the chance to shape our nation's future. I'm urging all Longford residents to take five minutes to check their registration details at www.checktheregister.ie. Whether you're a first-time voter, have recently moved house, or simply want to confirm your details are accurate, now is the time to act."

Chief Executive Paddy Mahon highlighted the council's preparation efforts, "Our Franchise Section has been working methodically to ensure the Register of Electors reflects our community accurately. The team processes hundreds of applications each month, updating addresses, adding new citizens, and maintaining the integrity of our democratic Register of Electors. We're ready to support any resident who needs assistance with their registration – this election belongs to everyone eligible to participate."

To vote at the upcoming Presidential Election, applicants must be Irish citizens, aged 18 or over by polling day, and ordinarily resident in the State. 

People can check their voter registration details on www.checktheregister.ie. People who are eligible to vote but who are not registered as electors still have time to apply for entry in the Register of Electors on www.checktheregister.ie and therefore, be eligible to vote on 24 October 2025. For those who wish to do so, paper application forms can be downloaded from www.checktheregister.ie (or can be obtained from Longford County Council). Applications for inclusion on the Register of Electors, whether online or by hard copy, must be received no later than 7 October 2025.

Postal votes are available for Gardaí, Defence Forces members, diplomats, those unable to attend due to illness or disability, full-time students, detained persons, certain election staff, and anonymous electors concerned about safety.

Special votes can be arranged for residents of hospitals, nursing homes, and care facilities, allowing voting at their accommodation through a Special Presiding Officer. Applications for postal and special votes must be received by Longford County Council no later 29 September 2025.

  • from the offices of Longford County Council, Great Water Street, Longford
  • by emailing franchise@longfordcoco.ie or 
  • by phoning 043 334 4256 during normal office hours

Specific criteria for each category can be found on the application form, which must be completed in accordance with the notes on the form.

Please note the latest date for receipt of all categories of postal voter applications in advance of the Presidential Election is 29 September 2025.
