The Green-Schools Flag is a symbol that shows visitors to the school and the wider community that their local school is actively involved in caring for the environment. This commitment not only benefits the environment, but also helps schools reduce costs related to waste, water and energy. In addition, it promotes healthier lifestyles and encourages pupils to develop positive environmental habits from an early age. Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Garry Murtagh said, “It’s incredibly uplifting to see our young people leading the way in environmental stewardship. The achievements of all eight schools reflect the values of pride, responsibility, and community spirit that define Longford. These students are not just learning about sustainability—they’re living it.”

Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon added, “These achievements are a testament to the power of education in shaping a more sustainable future. The commitment shown by students, school staff, and their wider communities is truly commendable. Longford County Council is proud to support and celebrate such inspiring environmental leadership in our schools.”

Carla McGoey, Environmental Awareness Officer for Longford County Council who supported Longford Green-Schools preparation said, “The green flag programme is very demanding and I’m very proud of all eight schools in Longford who renewed their green flags this year. The schools have worked very hard to earn their green flags and they should be very proud of their achievements. I would like to pay special tribute to all the Green-Schools committee members, all the school students, the Green-Schools coordinators and entire school community for their hard work and dedication to the programme”.
