Longford Sports Awards 2023 to recognise sporting excellence and dedication

Sports Awards Launch 2023

New categories to encourage volunteerism and maximise participation

Press Release: 20 October 2023

Together with the Longford Leader, Longford Sports Partnership, as part of Longford County Council, is pleased to announce this year’s Longford Sports Awards.

2023 has been a great year for sport in Longford, with huge achievements from many athletes and sporting organisations. These achievements are far beyond what would be expected of a small county.

The Longford Sports Partnership encourages people to nominate the achievements of our talented athletes throughout County Longford over the past year. These people are leaders in their chosen sport and without realising it, are inspiring others to get involved.

The aim of the Longford Sports Partnership is to maximise participation opportunities for all people in the community. With this in mind, Longford Sports Partnership feels it is important to recognise those that contribute to greater social inclusion and advocate for sports participation at community level. So, in addition to calling for nominations to the general categories, we call for nominations in the following categories also:

  • Exceptional Service to Sport/Hall of Fame,
  • Volunteer of the Year,
  • Junior Sportsperson of the Year,
  • and Sports Ability.

These winners represent what the Sports Partnership is all about; what sport is about. Sport should be progressive and attract participants from every corner of the county, from every age group and from all social backgrounds. Longford Sports Partnership hopes to remove any barrier that prevents participation in sport. Longford Sports Partnership sees the importance of recognising athletes, the work of volunteers and those working at grassroots level.

Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Colm Murray said, “Our athletes represent themselves, their families, their sports, our county and sometimes even our country. This representation means increased visibility of sport and indeed Longford. The sporting achievements are inspiring others and the next generation to get involved in sport and physical activity. This participation has such a positive effect. But we must not forget our volunteers. Without our volunteers these opportunities simply would not exist.”

Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon said, “I look forward to celebrating the achievements of Longford athletes and volunteers and highlighting the importance of their role in Longford. These Sports Awards are a wonderful opportunity to work with the Longford Leader to celebrate those achievements.”
