Explore County Longford with the trail running series and walking trails

Longford Sports Partnership and Longford Tourism, as part of Longford County Council, have launched several activities taking place over the summer months, including a Trail Running Series, the return of the Summer Walking Series and the ever popular (and already completely sold out) HER Outdoors Week which is funded by Sport Ireland.

Longford Trail Run Series 2023 offers a chance to explore and run, in nature. The series will see a 5K run take place at 7.30pm on each Wednesday evening during the month of August. The runs will take place at:

  • The Royal Canal in Longford Town (2 August)
  • Corlea Bog (9 August)
  • Derrycassin Woods (16 August)
  • Newcastle Woods (23 August).

Registration is online via myrunresults.com. There is a nominal cost of €8 associated with each run. Runners can also choose to pay €15 to receive t-shirt and medal per run or complete all four runs with t-shirt and medal for €30. This activity is in association with Longford Athletics Club.

Summer Walking Series 2023 sees eight walks taking place at 6pm every Monday and Wednesday throughout August with the first starting on Monday, 31 July. Participants can join in for as many walks as they wish. However, those who complete all eight walks will receive a free Walking Trail Challenge t-shirt. Registration is free and can be done on Tickettailor.com (tickettailor.com/events/longfordsportspartnership). Select your walk from the list below:

  • Wednesday, 2 August – Royal Canal Longford
  • Monday, 7 August Commons trail Lanesboro
  • Wednesday, 9 August – Corlea Bog
  • Monday, 14 August - Bri Leith Ardagh
  • Wednesday, 16 August - Derrycassin Woods
  • Monday, 21 August - Cairn Hill
  • Wednesday, 23 August - Newcastle Woods

The HER Outdoors Week inspire girls and women to embrace the outdoors, with many activities taking place. The week also aims to raise awareness of the benefits of being outside for physical and mental wellbeing. HER Outdoors Week takes place from 14 - 20 August. Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Colm Murray is encouraging everyone to get involved. “It is great that Longford people have so many activities on their doorstep, helped greatly by the investments the Council has made in County Longford’s outdoor recreational amenities. I encourage everyone to get involved, to make the most of the rest of the summer and to see County Longford in new ways.”

Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon spoke on the importance of the work of the Council in helping people take part in new activities. “The Council, through the work of our Longford Sports Partnership and Longford Tourism, proudly promotes these excellent opportunities for people to prioritise their physical and mental health.”

Tony Headon, Chairperson of Longford Sports Partnership says “Sport Ireland’s HER Outdoors Week is proving to be a wonderful annual opportunity for all females to escape to the outdoors and try something new. We want women in Longford discovering the fun and freedom of the outdoors. This week will ignite that sense of adventure. In Longford we have Archery, Yoga, Kayaking, Golf and much more. We are also excited to have the trail run and summer walk series taking place in Longford again, to showcase the lovely running and walking trails we have in County Longford.”
