Celebrating African cultures and local community contribution

Press Release: Thursday, 21 May 2026

Longford County Council has announced details of the Africa Day 2026 celebration, themed 'Many Nations, One Community'. The Africa Day event will take place at the Backstage Theatre, Longford on Friday, 5 June from 2pm - 6pm.

The family-friendly community event in association with Longford County Council and the Longford Africans Network will bring together people from across County Longford to celebrate the richness, diversity and vibrancy of African cultures through music, food, entertainment and community engagement.

A major highlight of the event will be a live performance by Yankari, the acclaimed 13-piece African fusion music group whose energetic performances blend traditional African rhythms with contemporary musical influences. The event will also feature African cuisine representing various countries, children’s entertainment, cultural displays, interactive activities for all ages as well as an awards presentation recognising community contribution.

Africa Day, commemorated annually worldwide, marks the founding of the African Union and celebrates the diversity, heritage and achievements of African nations and communities. The Longford celebration will also highlight the positive contribution of African communities to local social, cultural and economic life.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council Garry Murtagh said, “This event is a simple but powerful example of how culture brings people together. Africa Day helps strengthen understanding and respect across our communities in Longford.”

Chief Executive of Longford County Council, Paddy Mahon said, “Longford County Council is proud to support Africa Day as a community event that is open, positive and family-focused. It celebrates African cultures while helping people connect and learn from one another."

Cathaoirleach of the Longford Municipal District Cllr Uruemu Adejinmi, one of the organisers of the event said, “Africa Day continues to be an important opportunity for communities across Longford to come together in celebration of diversity, culture and shared community spirit. Each year, with the valued support of Irish Aid and Longford County Council, we have the opportunity to organise events that celebrate African culture, strengthen community connections and create positive experiences for families and residents of all backgrounds. These events also provide an important platform for local businesses, food vendors and performers to showcase their talents and contribute to the local economy.”

The event has been supported through funding from Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, whose support enables local authorities nationwide to organise Africa Day celebrations that promote a positive image of Africa and strengthen links between Ireland and African communities.

The programme has been designed as a welcoming, non-profit and family-focused occasion with a strong emphasis on participation, cultural exchange and community spirit.

Members of the public are warmly invited to attend and enjoy an afternoon of music, food, celebration and shared community experience.
