Press Release: Wednesday, 28 October 2026
Longford County Council officially launched the Longford Town Decarbonisation Zone (DZ) Report this week, marking a significant milestone in Longford's ongoing commitment to climate action. The launch formed part of Climate Action Week, highlighting the importance of local leadership and community engagement in addressing climate change.
The Decarbonisation Zone Report outlines the extensive range of actions already underway across Longford Town to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, promote sustainable transport and strengthen community climate resilience. The report identifies Longford Town as a key climate action testbed, showcasing practical measures that can be replicated throughout County Longford and beyond.
Based on the 2018 baseline, Longford Town accounted for approximately 10% of County Longford's total emissions, equivalent to 89,503 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e). The commercial and public sectors represent the largest share of emissions within the Decarbonisation Zone at 48%, while the residential and transport sectors account for 28% and 21% respectively.
Among the initiatives highlighted in the report are major investments in energy-efficient housing and retrofit programmes, active travel infrastructure, electric vehicle charging facilities, public sector energy upgrades, renewable energy projects, biodiversity enhancement measures and community-led climate action initiatives. The report also sets out the town's emissions profile and identifies strategic objectives aimed at supporting national climate targets.
The report demonstrates how collaboration between local authorities, public bodies, businesses, educational institutions, community organisations and residents can deliver meaningful climate action on the ground. Through a combination of innovative projects and community participation, the Decarbonisation Zone seeks to reduce emissions while delivering wider social, economic and environmental benefits for the people of Longford.
Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Gerry Hagan said, “This report shows that climate action is already taking place across Longford Town. From active travel and community allotments to better homes and public buildings, these projects can improve daily life while cutting emissions. The progress made so far reflects the commitment of our communities, businesses and public bodies to building a healthier and more resilient Longford.”
Longford County Council Chief Executive Samantha Healy said, “The Decarbonisation Zone gives us a clear picture of where emissions come from and where action can have the greatest effect. It also allows us to test practical measures in Longford Town that could be applied across the county. By working with local partners and communities, we can turn the report’s findings into focused, measurable action.”
A key project highlighted in the report is the 1.3 kilometre Battery Road Active Travel Scheme, which connects Longford Town Centre with the N4 Axis Centre. As a nationally recognised Pathfinder project, it demonstrates how strategic local investment can contribute to emissions reductions, healthier communities and a more sustainable transport network.
The report also highlights the Longford Town Community Allotments, a community-led initiative that was officially launched during Climate Action Week. The allotments encourage community participation, healthy lifestyles and a greater understanding of the relationship between local food production and climate action. By promoting sustainable food growing, biodiversity and environmental awareness, the project demonstrates how local communities can play an active role in supporting Longford's decarbonisation objectives.
Launching the report during Climate Action Week reinforces Longford County Council's commitment to supporting national climate objectives and encouraging local action. The week provides an opportunity to showcase progress, share best practice and inspire individuals, communities and organisations to play their part in building a more sustainable future.
The Longford Town Decarbonisation Zone Report serves as a roadmap for continued climate action and demonstrates the positive impact that coordinated, place-based initiatives can have in reducing emissions, improving quality of life and creating a more resilient community.
