Opening of ‘The Albert Reynolds Collection’

Jack Chambers, Minister for Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation officially opened the ‘Albert Reynolds Collection’ in Longford County Library. The Collection is made up of items donated by the Reynolds family to Longford County Library and Archives. It offers a rare opportunity of a glimpse into the life, work and memories of a major political figure through the items he personally treasured.

Minister Chambers said, "I am delighted to open this collection. It is a unique insight into a man that is held in huge esteem in politics - both nationally and internationally - and across the political divide. It is only right that it would be on display here in Longford and to support the important regional development that means so much to our towns. Albert Reynolds will always be remembered for his work as a peacemaker for which we all owe so much. However, he was effective across so many political offices and in business and serves as an inspiration for those who look at politics as a means of delivering real change for people, communities and our country."

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Garry Murtagh, spoke of the significance of the collection for Longford, "Longford County Council is honoured to accept the Albert Reynolds Collection on behalf of the people of Longford. We are deeply grateful to the Reynolds family for presenting it to us. The collection includes many unique items which reflect the life and work of a statesman who helped bring peace to our island. It is very fitting that the collection is back in Longford where Albert and his family lived for so many years."

Paddy Mahon, Chief Executive of Longford County Council, added that the presentation is timely. "The presentation of this most important collection coincides with Longford County Council’s success in securing THRIVE funding for the development of a museum and cultural centre in Connolly Barracks. Items from the collection will be displayed there permanently and will greatly enhance the exhibition being planned. This will help to ensure that Albert Reynolds will be remembered for generations to come."

The Collection includes a range of important archives that give a tangible connection to one of the most significant eras in Irish politics. It includes a large volume of correspondence, such as letters from international figures like the late Pope Francis and the late Senator Ted Kennedy, as well as a wide range of official photographs, from meetings of heads of state to key moments in Longford. The collection also contains numerous books, international awards and presentations, highlighting the high esteem in which the former Taoiseach was held.

Miriam Reynolds spoke of the importance of this to the family stating, "We thought about Longford, the Albert Reynolds Peace Park, Dad’s commitment to and love for the town, the county and its people. We thought about how grateful he was (and we remain) for the loyalty, love and support that the people of Longford gave to him throughout his career. We approached Longford County Library and Archives. We received a warm and enthusiastic response. It’s over fifty years since Dad was elected to Longford County Council, where his political career began. In a fitting full-circle moment, on what would have been his ninety-third birthday, we are honoured and grateful to be back at Longford County Council to celebrate the opening of the Albert Reynolds Collection."

The collection can be viewed in the research room in Longford County Library and Archives, Longford N39 R7R6, by appointment.
