The Department of Transport conducted a national review of speed limits in 2023, leading to the Road Traffic Act 2024, which introduced new default speed limits across Ireland. This initiative aims to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries by influencing driving behaviours and improving road safety.
The new default speed limit of 60 km per hour will apply to all rural local roads in County Longford, excluding regional and national roads, and roads with existing special speed limits of 30 km per hour or 50 km per hour. These changes are part of a phased approach to improving road safety, with further reviews planned for 2025.
Notice is given as follows
- The new default speed limit for all rural local roads in County Longford will be 60 km per hour (previously 80 km per hour).
- National schools in rural locations where a new special speed limit of 50km/hr has been applied.
- This new default speed limit will come into effect on Friday, 7 February 2025.
Please note that this new default speed limit does not include:
- All regional roads and all national roads.
- All public roads with a current special speed limit of 30 km per hour.
- All public roads with a current special speed limit of 50 km per hour.
These categories will be addressed in subsequent phases of the speed limit review, which are intended to progress in 2025.
