New solar powered bins for Ballinamuck Village
Two new compacter bins installed, first of seven county-wide

Longford County Council is delighted to have delivered two new eco-friendly compactor bins for the village of Ballinamuck.

The new bins, which have been supplied and installed by the local authority under the Anti-Dumping Initiative, are completely solar powered and are the first of seven due to be installed county-wide.

Compactor bins compress the disposed waste and therefore don’t need to be emptied as often, helping to reduce carbon emissions as a result.

The bins can be found in the village center and form part of the overall refurbishment programme, planned by Ballinamuck Village Enhancement.

The new additions to the street have arrived just in time for the 225th Anniversary of the Battle of Ballinamuck Commemoration Weekend, where thousands of visitors will descend on the village for four days of celebrations. The event is set to bring massive footfall, generating a considerable economic spin-off to the wider local area.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council Cllr Colm Murray welcomed the new bins. “County Longford is powering ahead with new eco-solutions all of the time and these compactor bins in Ballinamuck are a great example. I look forward to seeing this replicated right across the county.”

Chief Executive of Longford County Council Paddy Mahon added, “Longford County Council is committed to continuing to reduce carbon emissions and create energy efficient solutions that enhance our town and villages.”

Patsy Brady, Chairperson of Ballinamuck Village Enhancement said, “The new solar compactor bins look great and are a welcome addition to the village. They will help locals and tourists alike dispose of their litter in a safe and responsible way.”

The Anti-Dumping Initiative is coordinated through the Waste Enforcement Lead Authorities (WERLAs) which are Dublin City, Cork County, Leitrim and Donegal County Councils.
