Press Release: Friday, 01 May 2025

The reopening of MacEoin Park Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) in Longford Town was officially marked on Thursday, 30 April 2026, following the completion of a major upgrade funded through the Community Recognition Fund.
The renewed facility, which had been closed for almost two decades, now includes a new soccer pitch and a new handball wall. A funding allocation of €182,096, received under the Government’s Community Recognition Fund, together with additional funding from Longford County Council, ensured that this project restored an important recreational space at Mac Eoin Park for local people of all ages.
The official opening was performed by Dara Calleary TD, Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, and was attended by local councillors, council staff, community representatives and families from across the town.
Minister Dara Calleary’s said, “I am delighted to be here with you today to mark the reopening of this park. After nearly 20 years closed, this park has been transformed into a vibrant and welcoming facility for the whole community to enjoy.  With over €182,000 in funding from my Department under the Community Recognition Fund, this project has created a place where people can gather, play and connect in a safe and inclusive environment. I want to commend everyone involved in bringing this project to fruition.  I have no doubt that this park will be enjoyed by the whole community and surrounding areas for many years to come.
“The Community Recognition Fund was introduced in 2023 to recognise the huge efforts made by communities in welcoming and supporting people coming to Ireland. Communities like those here in Longford town, where huge efforts have been made to integrate new arrivals into our community.”
Leas Cathaoirleach of Longford Municipal District, Cllr Kevin Hussey, said, “The reopening of MacEoin Park is a very proud moment for Longford. This facility has been closed for almost twenty years, and its return shows what can be achieved when we listen to local communities and respond to their needs. The upgraded MUGA provides a safe, modern and inclusive space where people of all ages can meet, play sport and enjoy being active together. It is a real asset for the town and a place the community can take pride in.”
Chief Executive of Longford County Council Paddy Mahon said, “This project is an excellent example of how targeted national funding can deliver lasting benefits at local level. The investment in MacEoin Park has transformed a long‑closed space into a vibrant community facility that will be enjoyed for many years to come. Longford County Council is committed to supporting projects like this, which improve quality of life, encourage participation in sport and recreation, and strengthen community wellbeing.”
The reopening event included family‑friendly activities and refreshments, reflecting the community focus of the project and the long‑standing demand for the return of the MUGA.
