Public invited to shape Longford's Active Travel future

Longford County Council hosts information evening on Battery Road and Church Street cycle network expansion

Press Release: Monday, 9 February 2026

Longford County Council invites residents and businesses to attend a public information evening on Wednesday, 18 February, to view and discuss proposals for the Lower Battery Road and Church Street Active Travel project in Longford Town.

The event takes place at the County Council Atrium, Áras an Chontae, Great Water Street, Longford Town from 6pm to 7.30pm.

Co-funded by the National Transport Authority and the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund as part of the Active Travel programme and Camlin Quarter public realm enhancement, the project will extend Longford Town's cycle network southward along Battery Road from the recently completed upper Battery Road scheme.

Several design options for the Church Street car park area will be on display, showing different balances of public realm space and parking provision. Council staff, including the project lead, will be available throughout the evening to discuss the proposals and answer questions.

Attendees will have the opportunity to provide feedback through a questionnaire.

Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Garry Murtagh said, "Active travel isn't just about infrastructure – it's about reimagining how we use our town centre. These proposals offer different visions for Church Street, and we need to hear from the people who know this area best. I encourage everyone, particularly local businesses, to come along and have your say."

Chief Executive of Longford County Council, Paddy Mahon, said, "This project is a meaningful investment in Longford’s future as a town where walking and cycling are easier, safer and more enjoyable. We're committed to creating spaces that work for everyone – residents, businesses, and visitors alike. Your input at this stage is vital to getting the balance right."

The event is drop-in style, with no formal presentation required.
