Repair and Reuse Workshop aims to extend lifespan of everyday items

Longford Comhairle Na nÓg play key role in sustainability workshop

A Repair and Reuse Workshop, an exciting new initiative by Longford County Council, will take place in the Temperance Hall, Longford Town on Wednesday, 7 May from 10am to 1pm. 

Members of the public are invited to bring along their broken or damaged clothes, musical instruments and furniture which will be repaired by resident experts. Any unwanted musical instruments will be repaired and donated to Music Generation Longford who provide free music lessons to young people. This event has been organised by Longford County Council Climate Team in conjunction with Longford Employment Development and Information Centre EDI, REVAMP Longford and Longford Comhairle Na nÓg. Longford County Council also highlighted the support of other stakeholders including Denniston's Longford and the Longford Sewing Centre. 

Sustainability and repair workshops will run throughout the morning covering various topics such as: furniture repair, clothes repair, upholstery, instrument repair, furniture painting, REVAMP textile repair, African textile upcycling as well as stands for food waste and internal paint. 

Speaking in relation to the upcoming Repair and Reuse Workshop, Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council Cllr Mark Casey said, "This Repair and Reuse Workshop is a powerful example of how local action can drive meaningful climate solutions. By extending the life of everyday items, we reduce water, lower emissions, and foster a culture of sustainability within our community. It's a practical step forward in our commitment to a circular economy and a greener future for all."

Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon also praised the role of the younger generation for their involvement with this event saying, "This Repair and Reuse Workshop not only advances our climate action goals but also empowers our younger generation to lead the way in building a more sustainable future. Their creativity, energy, and commitment to rethinking waste shows that real change starts in our own communities. Longford County Council is proud to support initiatives that inspire environmental responsibility and innovation at every level."

The Repair and Reuse Workshop takes place in the Temperance Hall, Longford Town on Wednesday, 7 May from 10am to 1pm.
