Singer Erin Ross and athlete Fiona Gettings honoured at Civic Recognition

Longford women honoured for successes seen at international and national competitions

Singer Erin Ross and athlete Fiona Gettings have been honoured at a Civic Recognition event in Granard Library on Tuesday, 7 May. The event was led by Granard Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr Turlough McGovern.

Erin Ross was honoured for her success having won the All-Ireland Scór na nÓg Amhránaíocht Aonair (Solo Singing) title at the INEC, Killarney with her rendition of Pádraig Óg Mo Chroí. Having won this title in 2020, Erin’s recognition was unfortunately delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions which were widespread at the time of Erin’s success. Erin is from Mostrim in Edgeworthstown.  

Fiona Gettings was honoured for her recent success at the European Masters Championships. Held in Poland earlier this year, Fiona won gold in the cross-country event, completing the eight-kilometre distance with a time of 31 minutes and 49 seconds. Fiona was part of the team that combined to win team silver in the 8K cross-county event W40 category. At these championships, Fiona also won silver in the 3000m event. Fiona is from Lisryan in Granard, County Longford.

Speaking after the civic recognition, Granard Municipal District Cathaoirleach Cllr Turlough McGovern said, “I am delighted we get to recognise the achievements of Fiona Gettings and Erin Ross, two very talented Longford women. Fiona saw great success earlier this year representing her country and County Longford in Poland. She is one of our great athletes. And I am so glad that Erin finally gets the recognition she deserves for her singing success in Killarney back in 2020. She is an incredible talent and a credit to her county.”
