Yellow Wind Warning with risk of localised flooding issued for Storm Amy in County Longford

A Yellow Wind Warning will come into effect for County Longford at noon until midnight today, Friday, 3 October when Storm Amy will bring strong to near gale force and gusty south-westerly winds. There is potential for difficult travelling conditions, debris, loose objects becoming displaced, and the chance of some fallen trees is possible.

River flooding: Further spells of heavy rain are forecast, especially in the West and Northwest associated with Storm Amy. With ground already waterlogged, river levels will rise with smaller upland catchments in the West and Northwest at greatest risk of flooding.

Surface water: localised surface water flooding is expected today, Friday, 3 October due to heavy rain falling on waterlogged ground. Fallen leaves and debris from Storm Amy may block drains and small rivers, increasing the risk of flooding.

Don’t try to walk, cycle or drive through flooded areas, the depth of the water can be deceiving.

Remember: As little as 150mm of fast-flowing water can knock you off your feet and 300mm of fast-flowing water can move most cars off the road.

The forecasted winds have the capacity to bring severe, destructive, and damaging gusts, be aware of the dangers of fallen trees and power lines.

High seas: the public are advised to stay away from coastal areas during this period. The Irish Coast Guard are appealing to people to “Stay Back, Stay High, Stay Dry”.

There is a potential for wave overtopping and tidal flooding in low-lying, exposed Atlantic coastal areas. In addition to this, the Storm Amy may also bring localised heavy showers, which in turn may lead to localised surface flooding, which may prevail into Saturday.

The Electricity network may be impacted, the public are advised to prepare for the arrival of the storm including ensuring their mobile phone is fully charged to enable communication.
