Newtownforbes Bog Walk
Looped walking trail
Funded by the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme and Longford County Council
The Newtownforbes Bog Walk project saw the development of a 1.83km recreational trail which loops around the village. It is accessible from both the GAA grounds and a local access laneway. There is also a small loop on the trail which the community intends to develop as a children's walkway. Seats and picnic benches are interspersed along the path.
The trail opens up the countryside, grasslands, boglands and forestry to walkers, helping people to engage more with the nature which surrounds them. It also encourages active travel, physical activity and sustainable tourism opportunities in the area.
The works included clearing the site, laying the trail's base and upper layers, and replacing a cattle pen originally located along the trail.
Newtownforbes TidyTowns were the main project partners, working with Longford County Council, as well as National Parks and Wildlife Services, and Coillte.
The Newtownforbes Bog Walk received funding of €200,000 from the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Scheme. Match funding of €98,086 was provided by Longford County Council.
The project was completed in January 2023.
