Newtownforbes Bog Walk
Step into nature with the newly developed Newtownforbes Bog Walk - a scenic 1.83km loop trail designed to reconnect the community with the rich natural landscape surrounding the village.
This first phase of the project opens up access to grasslands, bog, and forest, encouraging locals and visitors alike to explore and appreciate the environment right on their doorstep.
Trail Highlights
- Access from across the GAA grounds
- Meandering paths through peaceful forestry
- A charming loop at the trail's end, envisioned as a future children's walkway
- Return to the village via a quiet local laneway
Works Completed
- Site clearance and trail construction with base and upper layers
- Replacement of a cattle pen originally located along the trail
- Installation of 4 seating areas and 2 picnic benches for rest and relaxation

Community Impact
Although footfall counters will be installed in a future phase, early observations show the trail is already being well used by the local community. It is making a positive contribution to mental and physical well-being, offering a peaceful and accessible space for all.
Funding and Delivery
The project, which was completed in 2023 received €200,000 in funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Scheme, with match funding of €98,086 provided by Longford County Council.

This community-led initiative was made possible through a strong partnership between Newtownforbes Tidy Towns and Longford County Council, with support from National Parks and Wildlife Services and Coillte.
