Granard Greenway

Part of the North Longford Rebel Trail

Funded by the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme and Longford County Council

The North Longford Rebel Trail - Granard Greenway saw the development of a 2.1km greenway for local and visiting cyclists and pedestrians. It enhances the connectivity between residential areas in Granard and Higginstown with recreational areas, including the sports complex at Higginstown, and primary and secondary schools at the northern end of the town. The work on this cycling and walking trail included installing a bridge over a stream and fencing to enhance the safety of users.

This greater connectivity between different parts of the area has helped to support the community's physical and mental wellbeing. It also has added to the tourism potential of the area, including the opening up of views of the Motte and adjoining church, with the trail running along a stream, creating a peaceful place for people to walk.

This project arose from extensive engagement with the local community regarding the development of a tourism amenity. It was hoped that this amenity would build on the tourism opportunities arising from the nearby Granard Motte Heritage Park project and further enhance the North Longford Rebel Trail. Stakeholder engagement took place with Higginstown Sports Ground Committee, Granard GAA, Granard Motte Community Enterprises, Lus na Greine Family Resource Centre, and Coillte.

The North Longford Rebel Trail - Granard Greenway received funding of €200,000 from the Department of Rural and Community Development under their Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. Match funding of €101,104 was provided by Longford County Council.

The project was opened on Wednesday, 28 June 2023.
