Abbeyshrule's Remote Working and Community Space
Located in the heart of Abbeyshrule village along the scenic Royal Canal Greenway, The Yard Hub is a modern remote working and community space that has transformed a once derelict site into a vibrant hub of activity, enterprise, and local pride.
A Vision for Rural Renewal
The project was initiated to create a new village hub - a space for economic and enterprise development that would allow local people, many of whom commute to Dublin and other urban centres, to work remotely and bring new energy to the village centre. It also aimed to enhance community spirit and provide a welcoming gateway for visitors entering County Longford via the Greenway.
From Dereliction to Destination
The site, owned by Waterways Ireland, previously consisted of vacant agricultural sheds and a large barn used for storage. Initially, the plan included upgrading these sheds and placing four prefabricated pods on-site. However, during detailed design, accessibility and comfort concerns led to a revised approach.
Following consultation with the local community, it was agreed that renovating the North Barn into a meeting/event/workspace would better serve both the project and the community. Additionally, the Abbeyshrule Kayaking Club, previously housed in an unsuitable barn with no changing or toilet facilities, was provided with a purpose-built storage shed to the rear of the site.

Facilities and Works Completed
The final development includes:
- Two individual office units, each with four desks
- A shared co-working space with six hot desks
- A small meeting room
- A large event/co-working space in the renovated North Barn
- Purpose-built kayak storage shed
- Landscaping with a low stone wall and connecting pathways
- Removal of the front wall and clearing of the site frontage
- Installation of a new sewer line brought under the canal to serve the site
- A service block for Royal Canal Greenway users and canal boats, integrated into the site by Waterways Ireland
All works were completed to a high standard, ensuring long-term functionality, comfort, and visual appeal.
