Moyne Latin School Heritage Centre and Moyne Amphitheatre

Moyne Latin School Heritage Centre

Funded by the Town and Village Renewal Scheme and Longford County Council

The Moyne Latin School Heritage Centre project included the renovation and conversion of a derelict building into an interpretative centre. This centre told the story of Moyne’s role in the development of education in the wider Midlands area. This history dates back to Penal times when hedge schools were present in the area. The site of the hedge school was developed, with the recreation of a classroom environment with audio-visual technology. This project allows the community of Moyne to share its history with visitors to the area and provides job opportunities at the centre.

Various stakeholders including Dromard Tidy Towns, Dromard Area Men’s Shed, Moyne Community School, and St Patrick’s National School worked closely with Longford County Council’s Regeneration team to deliver this project. The extension of the Latin School was completed by contractor Pauric McCabe. The audiovisual system was completed by David Grant. Homebird Design is responsible for the design of LatinSchool.ie, the official website of the Moyne Latin School Heritage Centre.

Moyne Latin School Heritage Centre was supported by Longford County Council and the Department of Rural and Community Development under their Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

The Maoyne Latin School Heritage Centre was opened on Friday, 3 May 2024.

Moyne Amphitheatre

Funded by the Town and Village Renewal Scheme and Longford County Council

Located near the Latin School Heritage Centre and local schools, the Moyne Amphitheatre is used by local schools and the wider local community. Suitable for both education and recreational activities, the space is used for outdoor education, music and drama performances.

The work involved clearing the area of the site and constructing a suitable amphitheatre structure. Various stakeholders including Dromard Tidy Towns, Dromard Area Men’s Shed, Moyne Community School, and St Patrick’s National School worked closely with Longford County Council’s Regeneration team to deliver this project.

The project is having a positive impact enhancing the sense of place. When combined with a number of other regeneration projects to be undertaken in the area, it creates an enhanced tourism offering. The more attractive presentation has addressed issues of dereliction and overgrowth in the heart of the village, creating a positive space for outdoor events.

Funding of €240,843 was provided under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme from the Department of Rural and Community Development. Match funding of €26,760 was provided by Longford County Council. The project was successfully delivered within budget.

Moyne Amphitheatre was opened on Friday, 8 September 2023.
