Sunflower Playground and Royal Canal Greenway Connection
A Community-Led Vision for Inclusion, Accessibility, and Outdoor Fun in Longford
Officially opened by Minister Dara Calleary in July 2025, the Sunflower Playground and Royal Canal Greenway Connection is a transformative project that brings inclusive recreation and improved connectivity to the heart of Longford. Developed through strong community collaboration, this initiative provides a safe, engaging space for children of all abilities - especially those with special needs - while linking Longford Town directly to the Royal Canal Greenway.
Project Goals
- Enhanced Accessibility: A new 240m shared pathway now connects Longford Town to the Royal Canal Greenway, promoting active travel and easier access to outdoor amenities.
- Inclusive Play: The specially designed playground features accessible equipment, sensory elements, and secure fencing, creating a welcoming space for children with complex needs.
- Community Cohesion: Led by the Longford Special Needs Parents Group (LSNPG) and supported by local organisations, the project fosters a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
- Environmental Enhancement: Native tree planting and landscaping have revitalised the area, improving biodiversity and creating a greener, more inviting public space.
- Support for Vulnerable Populations: The playground contributes to Longford's development as an Autism Friendly Community, promoting awareness and inclusion.
Key Features
- Playground Equipment: Embankment slide, inground trampoline, accessible swings, zip line, sensory tunnel, music section, and more.
- Recreational Amenities: Outdoor table tennis, climbing features, bog oak art maze, and seating areas.
- Infrastructure: Brushed concrete pathway, LED lighting, land drainage, privacy fencing, and ducting for future utilities.
