Longford Wastewater Treatment Plant

Longford Wastewater Treatment Plant is located in the townland of Cartrons and was completed in the early 1990’s. The previous (i.e. pre 1990) Wasterwater treatment Works, which was located at Little Water Street, is also in use as storm holding tanks, which eliminated the need for storm tanks on the site of the existing works. The existing works can treat loads up to 3 DWF. The Little Water Street storm tanks are capable of holding flows in excess of 3 DWF and up to a maximum of 5 DWF  for 2 hours.

The design of the existing works in the early 1990’s was detailed in two stages. The first stage ( existing) was designed to cater for a population of 20,000pe and a flow of 140L/s. The second stage (future) is designed to cater for a population of 40,000pe and a flow of 280L/s.

The Longford Wastewater Treatment process is a conventional extended aeration process. The existing plant has a design capacity of 20,000pe and a design effluent quality of 14mg/L BOD, 20mg/L suspended solids and 2 mg/L of phosphorus. The influent to the wastewater treatment plant is screened with a mechanical back-raked screen. Grit is removed with a Pista Circular grit trap. The flow is then split between four aeration tanks which aerate the activated sludge with surface aerators. Two circular clarifiers with half bridge scrapers are used for final settlement prior to discharge of final effluent to the River Camlin.

Longford County Council was granted a licence by the Environmental Protection Agency on the 25/9/2008 to discharge to the River Camlin.
