Water Schemes

This Department is responsible for providing public drinking water and wastewater treatment services. We maintain and monitor existing services and design and construct new facilities. We administer grants for group water and sewerage schemes and also for the provision and improvement of individual water supplies. We also process applications for new connections to the Public Water and Sewerage system.

Public drinking water is provided by the 5 regional water schemes that serve the County and the average daily water production is 14,500 cu.m./day. These include:Wastewater is treated at the 11 public sewerage schemes:

Lonford Central:

This scheme serves Longford town and surrounding areas such as Clondara, Balllinalee, Drumlish, Edgeworthstown and Newtownforbes The water is supplied from the Lough Forbes treatment plant.

Granard:

This scheme serves Granard and surrounding areas. The water is supplied from Lough Kinale Water Treatment Plant. 

Lough Gowna:

 This scheme supplies water to the Aughnacliffe, Ballinamuck and Moyne areas of north Longford. The water is abstracted from Lough Gowna and treated at Smear Water Treatment Plant. 

Ballymahon:

This scheme supplies water to Abbeyshrule, Ardagh, Ballymahon, Carrickboy, Edgeworthstown and Kenagh The water is abstracted from the Inny River and treated at the Abbeyshrule Water Treatment Plant. Groundwater is abstracted to supply Kenagh.
Lanesboro / Newtowncashel:
 
This scheme supplies water to the Lanesboro and Newtowncashel areas. The source is groundwater.
