Welcome to Environmental Awareness
The Environmental Awareness Officer has responsibility for developing and implementing environmental awareness programmes in Longford County. The Environmental Awareness Officer (EAO) works principally under the following main headings
- Waste Prevention Awareness
- Anti-litter Awareness
- Water Conservation & Water Pollution
- Community Support
- Climate Action & Biodiversity.
Longford County Council is actively promoting waste prevention and resource conservation throughout its public awareness campaigns. Key target groups include businesses, schools and communities. Longford County Council regards education as a fundamental cornerstone of environmental protection.
To this end, the Environmental Awareness Officer in Longford County Council is running a proactive awareness programme with local initiatives at the core.
Environmental Awareness, waste prevention, reuse activities in the county are currently focused on the following areas:
Supporting and assisting schools and homes in environmental education programmes: Green Schools, green homes programme;
Participating in and promotion of waste prevention and minimisation programmes streaming from the National Waste Prevention Programme (NWPP); for example, Local Authority Prevention Programme (LAPN), Stop Food Waste programme, Free Trade Ireland and Smile Resource Exchange;
Assisting and supporting local environmental social enterprises working specifically in the area of reuse and upcycling;
Management and coordination of grants and funding: Local Agenda 21, Anti-Litter and Anti-Graffiti grants, Green Enterprise and LAPN;
Coordinating individual or joint local authority media campaigns, in particular billboards, local radio, print, cinema and social media;
Participation in National Tree Week, National Recycling Week, National Spring Clean, Gum litter task force and coordinating large goods and mobile WEE collections;
Participation in seasonal campaigns – green Christmas, Easter and Reuse Month;
Promotion of and participation in Tidy Towns and community clean-ups;
Promoting composting through home composting and community composting programmes;
Promotion of local recycling infrastructure (bottle banks, bring centres/CA sites) and
Promoting Biodiversity and Climate Change programmes
