Green Schools

Green Schools Logo Longford County Council actively supports the national initiative "Green Schools" co-ordinated by An Taisce, which is designed to bring environmental issues into the classroom and instil a sense of environmental caring among school children of all ages. Litter/waste management is a mandatory first year theme for schools taking up the challenge. Tashinny national school Ballymahon was the first Longford School to obtain the coveted Green Flag. Longford now has one of the highest numbers of registered schools in the green schools programme in Ireland.

At present Longford has 43 green flags. These schools are to be congratulated on their success to date.

The Environmental Awareness Officer visits schools in the County to deliver the energy, water and anti-litter message and these visits form part of a new educational strategy, which is currently being put in place. The Environmental Awareness Officer has commenced a strategic Schools programme, which will run through out the school year.

Longford has the highest number of schools registered in the green schools programme in the country with 100% of secondary schools and 98% of primary schools registered in the programme. The number of schools with green flags in the county continues to increase each year with more and more schools sporting the coveted green flag. The green flag is an indication that the schools is actively involved in helping to protect the environment.

Application Process

New & Renewal Schools

Schools that are working towards achieving their first Green Flag and are working on the theme of Litter and Waste and schools who have already achieved one or more Green Flags and are working on one of the following themes; Energy, Water, Travel, Biodiversity, Global Citizenship or Climate Change.
