Comhairle na nÓg
What is Comhairle na nÓg?
Comhairle na nÓg is a children and youth council which gives young people a real say in the decisions that matter to them. It provides young people with an opportunity to have their say on the services, policies and issues that affect them in their local area and nationally.
Comhairle na nÓg operates in each of 31 Local Authorities areas across Ireland. They are funded and managed by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY). Comhairle na nÓg enables young people aged 12-17 to exercise their right to influence decision-making on the topics most important to them.
Longford Comhairle na nÓg
Longford Comhairle na nÓg is one such children and youth council under the responsibility of Longford County Council. Longford Comhairle na nÓg Steering Committee chaired by Cllr. Niall Gannon meets quarterly to support the work of the Comhairle. Longford Comhairle na nÓg members meet on a weekly basis in the ‘Attic House’ Longford supported by a Co-ordinator employed by Foróige.
Longford Comhairle na nÓg members represent the voice of young people from County Longford at national consultations on various plans and initiatives. At local level they are actively involved across the Council departments on various programmes and activities.
In autumn every year they host a Youth Conference inviting young people from all post-primary schools, Family Resource Centres, County Longford Youth Service and other youth services across the County.
