Join the Fire Service

People from all walks of life are serving as part-time firefighters. Everyone from the self-employed, at home parents, shift workers, those seeking work, professionals and many more are helping to save lives.

They are developing their leadership and teamworking skills and making a difference in their communities. Their work also helps protect the environment, as well as people's property, businesses and other buildings. By joining you will also get to meet new people, make lifelong friends and learn lifelong skills.

It is also a chance to earn extra income, and there is a pension scheme which applies on retirement. 

Training

Successful applicants receive training in firefighting skills, cardiac first responder and emergency first responder training, road traffic collision rescue, water rescue, emergency services driving, and further, more specialised training as they progress. 

Payment

Payment is on the basis of an annual retainer. Weekly training and any call outs will also be paid on an hourly rate. 

Can you become a part-time firefighter?

You can become a part-time firefighter if you:

  • Reside and work within 7 minutes of the fire station
  • Have written evidence from your employer as to availability
  • Are physically fit
  • Are prepared to accept discipline and instruction
  • Are ready to give generously of your time and efforts
